The Book of the Seer

Chapter 20: The Great Harmonia

Andrew Jackson Davis

After "Divine Revelations," Davis wrote a series of works collected under the title "The Great Harmonia." There were six volumes, each addressing a different aspect of existence.

Volume One, "The Physician," addressed the healing of the body. Davis taught that disease arose from disharmony between the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the person. True healing required addressing all three.

"The physician who treats only the body treats only the symptom. The cause lies deeper — in the mind, in the spirit, in the relationship between the individual and the cosmos. Until these are brought into harmony, the disease will return in one form or another."

Volume Two, "The Teacher," addressed the education of the mind. Davis criticized the educational methods of his day, which stuffed children with facts without developing their capacity for independent thought.

"We are taught what to think, but not how to think. We are given conclusions but not the means to reach our own conclusions. True education awakens the inner faculties. It does not fill an empty vessel but kindles a sleeping flame."

Volume Three, "The Seer," addressed the vision of the spirit. Davis described his own clairvoyant experiences and argued that such capacities were latent in all human beings.

"I am not special. I simply discovered what everyone possesses. The Superior Condition is the birthright of every soul. Most do not access it because they do not know it exists, or because they have been taught to distrust their own perceptions. But the door is open to all who seek."
